There were nearly 11,000 librarians and media collections specialists jobs in the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA, metropolitan area. Large numbers of librarians and media collections specialists were also employed in Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI (4,140); Boston-Cambridge-Nashua, Massachusetts-New Hampshire (3,930); Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV (3,740); Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California (2,770) and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (2,720).

The Boston, Washington, and New York areas (with location quotients of 1.61, 1.37, and 1.28, respectively) had higher concentrations of librarians and media collections specialists than the nation as a whole. The concentration of librarians and media collections specialists employed in the Chicago area (1.04) was near the concentration level for the nation. Concentrations of these workers in the Dallas (0.78) and Los Angeles (0.51) areas were lower than the national concentration.

Location quotients are used to compare an occupation's employment concentration in different areas. For example, an occupation with 6 percent of county employment and 2 percent of national employment would have a location quotient in that county of 6/2 = 3. Location quotients greater than 1.0 mean an occupation's share of employment in an area is greater than its share of national employment; quotients less than 1.0 indicate concentrations lower than the nation as a whole.

The concentration of librarians and media collections specialists in the State College, Pennsylvania, area was more than 5 times the national concentration. Approximately 4.48 of every 1,000 jobs in the State College area were librarians and media collections specialists jobs, compared to 0.88 per 1,000 in the nation overall.

Springfield, Ohio, with a location quotient of 4.64 for librarians and media collections specialists, had over 4 and a half times the concentration of jobs in this occupation compared with the nation as a whole. The location quotient of librarians and media collections specialists was 3.00 in Weirton-Steubenville, West Virginia-Ohio, and above 2.50 in Ithaca, New York; Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford, Virginia; Mansfield, Ohio; Charlottesville, Virginia; Gainesville, Florida; Bloomington, Indiana; and Lawrence, Kansas. Location quotients were 2.00 or higher in 23 metropolitan areas (including 3 in Puerto Rico).

Bakersfield and Visalia-Porterville, California; Midland, Texas; Lakeland-Winter Haven, Florida; and Modesto and Stockton-Lodi, California, were among metropolitan areas with lower employment concentrations for librarians and media collections specialists in May 2023.
