Consumer Price Index, St. Louis area – April 2025

Area prices rose 1.2 percent in March and April, up 2.2 percent over the year

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in the St. Louis area advanced 1.2 percent for the two months ending in April 2025, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Assistant Commissioner for Regional Operations Michael Hirniak noted that prices for all items less food and energy increased 1.1 percent, largely influenced by rising costs for owners’ equivalent rent of residences. The energy index was up 4.4 percent in March and April, while the food index advanced 0.6 percent. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, bi-monthly changes may reflect seasonal influences.)

The St. Louis area all items CPI-U rose 2.2 percent for the 12 months ending in April. The index for all items less food and energy increased 2.9 percent over the year. Food prices were up 2.5 percent, while energy prices were down 6.0 percent.

Food

Food prices increased 0.6 percent for the two months ending in April. Prices for food away from home (restaurant, cafeteria, and vending purchases) advanced 0.8 percent, and prices for food at home (grocery store purchases) were up 0.5 percent for the same period. A 2.5-percent increase in other food at home prices led the food at home index rise. A decline in cereals and bakery products (-2.0 percent) slightly offset the increase.

Over the year, the food index advanced 2.5 percent. The food away from home index increased 3.9 percent, and the food at home index rose 1.6 percent. Within the grocery indexes, higher prices for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs (+3.6 percent) and fruits and vegetables (+3.4 percent) contributed most to the increase.

Energy

The energy index increased 4.4 percent for the two months ending in April. Gasoline prices rose 1.5 percent over the same period.

From April 2024 to April 2025, energy prices fell 6.0 percent. The index for gasoline was down 14.2 percent over the year.

All items less food and energy

The index for all items less food and energy rose 1.1 percent during the two-month period, primarily driven by an increase to the index for owners’ equivalent rent of residences (+2.1 percent). The education and communication index (+2.3 percent) and public transportation index also contributed to the advance. Notable price declines occurred in the medical care index (-0.7 percent).

Over the year, the index for all items less food and energy advanced 2.9 percent. Component indexes contributing most to the increase included owners’ equivalent rent of residences (+6.2 percent) and rent of primary residence (+6.6 percent). Declines within the all items less food and energy index included the apparel index (-3.5 percent).

The Consumer Price Index for June 2025 is scheduled to be released on Tuesday, July 15, 2015, at 7:30 a.m. (CT).

Technical Note

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for St. Louis is published bi-monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program. Each local index has a much smaller sample size than the national or regional indexes and is, therefore, subject to substantially more sampling and other measurement error. As a result, local-area indexes are more volatile than the national or regional indexes. In addition, local indexes are not adjusted for seasonal influences. NOTE: Area indexes do not measure differences in the level of prices between cities; they only measure the average change in prices for each area since the base period.

Percent changes for all-items data previously found in Table A of this release can be accessed in Chart 1 for this release and its attendant data table. A full all-items data series history for the original index value and for 1-month, 2-month, 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month percent changes can be accessed via BLS data query tools. A direct link to the all-items series is provided in Table 1 of this release under historical data.

The St. Louis, MO-IL, Core Based Statistical Area covered in this release includes Bond, Calhoun, Clinton, Jersey, Macoupin, Madison, Monroe, and St. Clair counties in Illinois; and Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, St. Charles, St. Louis, and Warren counties and St. Louis City in Missouri.
