Consumer Price Index, Midwest region — June 2026

Regional prices were down 0.5 percent in June, up 3.8 percent over the year

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) for the Midwest region fell 0.5 percent in June, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported today. The energy index decreased 5.6 percent, largely due to a decline in gasoline prices. The index for food declined 0.1 percent over the month, while the index for all items less food and energy was unchanged. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, month-to-month changes may reflect seasonal influences.)

The Midwest region all items CPI-U rose 3.8 percent for the 12 months ending in June. The index for all items less food and energy increased 2.9 percent, while the energy index saw a 16.0 percent advance over the year. The index for food was up 2.6 percent.

Food

The food index declined 0.1 percent for the month of June. The index for food at home (grocery store purchases) decreased 0.5 percent, with the indexes for 4 of the 6 major grocery store food groups declining.  Prices for food away from home (restaurant, cafeteria, and vending purchases) advanced 0.5 percent for the same period. Within the food at home category, the index for nonalcoholic beverages and beverage materials (-2.2 percent) led declines, followed by the fruits and vegetables index (-1.5 percent).

Over the year, the index for food advanced 2.6 percent. The food away from home index rose 3.9 percent, while the food at home index saw a 1.8 percent gain. All six major grocery store food groups saw increases for this period, with advances led by the meats, poultry, fish, and eggs (+2.9 percent) and fruits and vegetables (+3.7 percent) indexes.

Energy

The energy index fell 5.6 percent over the month due to an 11.9-percent decline in gasoline prices. The indexes for natural gas service (+3.2 percent) and electricity (+3.0 percent) rose over the same period.

From June 2025 to June 2026, the energy index rose 16.0 percent, largely due to higher prices for gasoline (+26.6 percent). The index for electricity advanced 7.7 percent, while the natural gas service index saw a 1.0-percent loss over the past year.

All items less food and energy

The index for all items less food and energy was unchanged in June. Among the index’s components, prices were lower for lodging away from home, communication, and apparel (-1.8 percent). In contrast, prices were higher for owners’ equivalent rent of residences (+0.4 percent) and new and used motor vehicles (+0.8 percent).

The index for all items less food and energy increased 2.9 percent over the year. Components contributing most to the annual increase included shelter (+4.3 percent), recreation (+5.2 percent), medical care services (+3.3 percent) and public transportation.

The July 2026 Consumer Price Index for the Midwest region is scheduled to be released on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

Technical Note

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for the Midwest region is published monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program.

The Midwest region is comprised of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Refer to the national CPI news release technical note or the Handbook of Methods for more information.
