The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in the Midwest Region fell 0.2 percent in July, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported today. The energy index decreased 1.9 percent, largely due to a decline in gasoline prices. The all items less food and energy index declined 0.1 percent over the month, while the index for food was unchanged. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, month-to-month changes may reflect seasonal influences.)

The Midwest Region all items CPI-U rose 3.5 percent for the 12 months ending in July. The index for all items less food and energy rose 2.7 percent over the year, while the energy index advanced 14.2 percent. The index for food was up 2.8 percent.

Food prices were unchanged for the month of July. Prices for food away from home (restaurant, cafeteria, and vending purchases) increased 0.1 percent, while prices for food at home (grocery store purchases) declined 0.1 percent for the same period. Within the food at home category, prices paid for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs (-0.5 percent) and cereals and bakery products (-0.6 percent) led declines. In contrast, the indexes for nonalcoholic beverages and beverage materials (+1.1 percent) and other food at home (+0.3 percent) increased over the month.

Over the year, the index for food advanced 2.8 percent. The food away from home index rose 3.7 percent, while the food at home index saw a 2.2-percent gain. All six major grocery store food groups rose for this period, with other food at home (+1.9 percent) leading the increases.

The energy index decreased 1.9 percent over the month, largely due to a 3.2 percent decline in gasoline prices. The index for natural gas service also fell over the month (-3.2 percent), while the index for electricity increased 1.0 percent.

From July 2025 to July 2026, the energy index increased 14.2 percent over the year, primarily due to an advance in the index for gasoline (+23.1 percent). The index for electricity increased 8.1 percent, while the index for natural gas service decreased 2.4 percent.

The index for all items less food and energy declined 0.1 percent in July. Among the index’s components, prices were lower for public transportation, recreation (-0.9 percent), and medical care commodities (-3.1 percent). In contrast, prices were higher for shelter (+0.4 percent), education and communication (+0.5 percent), and medical care services (+0.3 percent).

The index for all items less food and energy rose 2.7 percent over the year. Components contributing to the increase included shelter (+4.5 percent), medical care services (+3.3 percent), and recreation (+3.6 percent). In contrast, prices were lower for household furnishings and operations (-1.8 percent), medical care commodities (-4.6 percent), and used cars and trucks (-2.0 percent).

The August 2026 Consumer Price Index for the Midwest Region is scheduled to be released on Friday, September 11, 2026.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for the Midwest region is published monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program.

The Midwest region is comprised of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
