Employment increased in 4 of the 5 largest counties in Utah from September 2024 to September 2025, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Acting Regional Commissioner Jerome Watters noted that Washington County had the largest over-the-year increase in employment, with a gain of 2.8 percent. (See chart 1 and table 1.)

Among the five largest counties in Utah, employment was highest in Salt Lake (808,900) in September 2025. Together, the five largest counties accounted for 84.1 percent of total covered employment within the state. Nationwide, the 372 largest counties comprise 73.2 percent of total covered employment in the United States. (Large counties and county equivalents are those with annual average employment levels of 75,000 or more in 2024.)

All five large Utah counties reported average weekly wage increases over the year. (See chart 2.) Salt Lake had the largest increase (+4.8 percent). Over-the-year wage changes for Utah's other large counties ranged from 3.6 percent to 1.2 percent.

The weekly wage in 1 of the 5 largest counties in Utah was above the national average of $1,459. Average weekly wages ranged from $1,490 in Salt Lake to $961 in Washington.

Employment and wage levels (but not over-the-year changes) are also available for the 24 small counties in Utah, defined as having employment below 75,000 in 2024. (See table 2.) Wage levels in all 24 smaller counties were below the national average. Garfield reported the highest average weekly wage ($1,358). Piute reported the lowest average weekly wage ($768) in the state.

Among all 29 Utah counties, 5 reported average weekly wages of $924 or less, 11 had wages from $925 to $1,049, 6 had wages from $1,050 to $1,174, and 7 had average weekly wages of $1,175 or higher. (See map 1 and table 2.)
