County Employment and Wages in Tennessee — Fourth Quarter 2024

Employment rose in 5 of the 6 largest counties in Tennessee from December 2023 to December 2024, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Regional Commissioner Victoria G. Lee noted that Rutherford County had the largest over-the-year increase in employment at 2.4 percent. (See chart 1 and table 1.)

Among the six largest counties in Tennessee, employment was highest in Davidson (563,800) in December 2024. Together, the six largest counties accounted for 55.6 percent of total covered employment within the state. Nationwide, the 369 largest counties comprise 73.3 percent of total covered employment in the United States. (Large counties and county equivalents are those with annual average employment levels of 75,000 or more in 2023.)

Large county average weekly wages in the fourth quarter 2024

All six large Tennessee counties reported average weekly wage gains over the year. (See chart 2.) Davidson had the largest gain (+6.8 percent). Over-the-year wage gains among Tennessee’s other five large counties ranged from 4.7 percent to 2.1 percent.

Weekly wages in 2 of the 6 largest counties in Tennessee were above the national average of $1,507. Average weekly wages ranged from $1,754 in Williamson to $1,253 in Rutherford.

Smaller county average weekly wages in the fourth quarter of 2024

Employment and wage levels (but not over-the-year changes) are also available for the 89 small counties in Tennessee, defined as having employment below 75,000 in 2023. (See table 2.) Wage levels in 86 of the 89 smaller counties were below the national average. Lawrence reported the highest average weekly wage ($2,816). Hancock reported the lowest average weekly wage ($715) in the state.

Among all 95 Tennessee counties, 12 reported average weekly wages of less than $900, 26 registered wages from $900 to $999, 25 had wages from $1,000 to $1,099, 14 had wages from $1,100 to $1,199, and 18 had average weekly wages of $1,200 or higher. (See map 1 and table 2.)
