Geography Awareness Week

Were you aware it’s Geography Awareness Week? This week also plays host to GIS Day, an annual celebration of geographic information systems.
Geographers and others often use maps to tell stories that help us understand patterns and identify trends. Maps, of course, require data. So, it seems like a good time to highlight BLS mapping tools and geographical area data.
You may already be aware that we have a lot of data at the state, metropolitan area, and county level. You may even use our data in maps. We do! For instance, we wondered about employment in areas that might see an influx of traffic during the 2024 solar eclipse. So, we mapped BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) data and found there were 18.3 million jobs and 1.1 million establishments in the path of totality. We also rely on QCEW data to publish important hurricane flood zone maps that provide a look at how many businesses and workers might be affected by hurricanes. And less important information such as where to find the most taco establishments on National Taco Day. Plus, we publish maps and area charts for many of our news releases.
If you need a quick view of our data by area, we provide tools you can use to generate maps. Our unemployment rate mapping tool has been around for a decade or so, as has our state and county industry employment and wage mapping tool.
