The United States will experience a solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024. There are 389 U.S. counties in the path of totality, where the moon will completely cover the sun. This path stretches from southwestern Texas to the northernmost point of Maine. There were 18.3 million jobs and 1.1 million establishments in the counties in this path in September 2023.

The three counties with the highest employment in September 2023 were all in Texas: Dallas County (1.8 million jobs), Tarrant County (1 million jobs), and Bexar County, (0.9 million jobs). The counties with the lowest September 2023 employment were Menard County, Texas (428 jobs), Edwards County, Texas (647 jobs), and Pope County, Illinois (657 jobs).
The county in the path of totality with the highest average weekly wage for the third quarter of 2023 was Martin County, Indiana ($1,704). The second and third highest counties in terms of average weekly wages were both located in Texas – Travis County, Texas ($1,691) and Dallas County, Texas ($1,572). On the other end of the spectrum, three counties in Missouri—Ripley County, Ozark County, and Shannon County—had average weekly wages below $640, less than half of the national average weekly wage for all employees ($1,334).
