BLS transition to .gz format files
Effective May 12, 2018, BLS will be replacing all its old .Z (“compress”) format files with .gz (GNU Zip or “gzip”) format files under https://download.bls.gov/pub/time.series/compressed/tape.format/.
To ensure a smooth transition, we strongly recommend all BLS compressed files users to update any automated scripts and begin using the new .gz (GNU Zip or “gzip”) file format before May 12, 2018.
For your convenience, below is a crosswalk of the OLD and NEW filenames. Instructions on how to open .gzip file is also available at https://www.bls.gov/help/instructions-for-opening-gz-files.htm
