Brett Matsumoto, Commissioner

Dr. Brett Matsumoto became the 17th Commissioner of Labor Statistics on August 11, 2026. He was nominated by President Donald J. Trump on May 11, 2026, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 7, 2026.

Dr. Matsumoto is a research economist who has served 11 years in federal government with positions at the Bureau of Labor Statistics and has served as a senior economist on the White House Council of Economic Advisers, where he advised White House officials on matters of economic measurement in the U.S. economy.

His research has focused on inflation and consumption measurement. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and bachelor’s degrees in economics, philosophy, and history from the University of Delaware.
