Green Goods and Services

Green Goods and Services Employment Quarterly Update

The Bureau of Labor Statistics is releasing quarterly updates of estimates of green goods and services (GGS) employment.  These estimates are preliminary and experimental and will not be available using data retrieval tools found on BLS.gov.

In March 2012, BLS published GGS employment estimates for 2010 based on an annual survey of establishments from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW).  The survey asked establishments to provide the share of fiscal year 2010 revenue accounted for by green goods and services (as defined by BLS).  GGS employment for the establishments was estimated by multiplying their revenue share times their average quarterly employment for 2010 as reported to the QCEW.

The GGS employment updates presented here for the first, second, and third quarters of 2011 apply these same (fiscal year 2010) revenue shares to updated 4-quarter average employment levels from the QCEW.  For example, the 1st quarter 2011 GGS employment estimate presented here applies the 2010 revenue shares to the average QCEW employment for the four quarters ending in the 1st quarter 2011.

These estimates of GGS employment for the first three quarters of 2011 are preliminary until the annual 2011 GGS survey is completed and establishments provide their share of fiscal year 2011 revenue accounted for by green goods and services.  Results from the 2011 annual survey are expected to be available in early 2013.
