G824 LOCOMOTIVE OPERATING OCCUPATIONS
Exclude Helpers (H865).
Drive electric, diesel-electric, steam, or gas-turbine-electric locomotives, interpreting train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations to transport passengers or freight, or operate switching within railroad yards.
Monitor locomotive instruments and watch for dragging equipment, obstacles on right of way and train signals. Inventory supplies such as fuel, water, and sand to ensure safe, efficient operation during run. Observe gauges. May be designated according to kind of locomotive, such as diesel or electric, or according to traffic, such as road-freight or road-passenger.
Other locomotive operating occupations:
Control dinkey engine powered by electric, gasoline, steam, compressed air or diesel engine to transport or shunt cars; or operate diesel or electrically powered shuttle car for underground mine to transport materials from working face to mine cars or conveyor. May be designated as Dinkey Operators Motorperson, Larry-Car Operator, Locomotive Operators Trammer, Trainperson, etc.
Drive electric powered streetcar, trolley, tram, elevated or subway train to transport passengers. May collect fares, issue change and transfers, and give fare, schedule and route information to passengers.
