In December 2022, national employment increased to 152.3 million, a 2.6-percent increase over the year, as measured by the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) program. Midland, TX, had the largest over-the-year increase in employment, with a gain of 7.9 percent. Employment data in this release are presented for December 2022, and average weekly wage data are presented for fourth quarter 2022. Among the 355 largest counties, 240 had over-the-year decreases in average weekly wages. In the fourth quarter of 2022, average weekly wages for the nation decreased to $1,385, a 2.3-percent decrease over the year. This is the fourth decline since 2016, and 1 of only 10 declines in the history of the series dating back to 1978. San Francisco, CA, had the largest fourth quarter over-the-year decrease in average weekly wages, with a loss of 22.6 percent. (See table 1.) Large County Employment in December 2022 Midland, TX, had the largest over-the-year percentage increase in employment (+7.9 percent). Within Midland, the largest employment increase occurred in natural resources and mining, which rose by 3,923 over the year (+14.7 percent). Elkhart, IN, and Hendricks, IN, both experienced the largest over-the-year percentage decrease in employment, each with a loss of 1.7 percent. Within Elkhart, manufacturing had the largest employment decrease, with a decline of 3,206 (-4.3 percent). Within Hendricks, trade, transportation, and utilities had the largest employment decrease, with a decline of 2,208 (-5.9 percent). Large County Average Weekly Wage in Fourth Quarter 2022 San Francisco, CA, had the largest over-the-year percentage decrease in average weekly wages (-22.6 percent). Within San Francisco, an average weekly wage loss of $1,263 (-24.9 percent) in professional and business services made the largest contribution to the county’s decrease in average weekly wages. Midland, TX, had the largest over-the-year percentage increase in average weekly wages, with a gain of 6.1 percent. Within Midland, natural resources and mining had the largest impact, with an average weekly wage increase of $83 (+3.3 percent) over the year. Ten Largest Counties All of the 10 largest counties had over-the-year percentage increases in employment. In December 2022, Miami-Dade, FL, had the largest over-the-year employment percentage gain (+4.3 percent). Within Miami-Dade, professional and business services had the largest employment increase and rose by 10,701 (+6.1 percent). (See table 2.) Nine of the 10 largest counties had over-the-year percentage decreases in average weekly wages. In fourth quarter 2022, New York, NY, experienced the largest over-the-year percentage loss in average weekly wages (-9.4 percent). Within New York, financial activities had the largest impact, with an average weekly wage decrease of $1,002 (-14.9 percent) over the year.
