Producer Price Indexes

New Aggregate Net Output Indexes

With the release of data for January 2007, the Producer Price Index (PPI) program will begin publishing a new series of aggregate, net output industry indexes which cross industry sectors. Net output aggregate indexes have weights assigned to their component industry indexes which exclude all transactions with other industries within the aggregation. This weighting methodology eliminates multiple counting of price changes within the aggregations.

The new set of aggregate industry indexes are listed below, along with brief explanations of the sectors included in the aggregations:

Total mining, utilities, and manufacturing industries (pcuamum--amum--) - This index is a cross sector aggregate index that represents the net output of the mining, utilities, and manufacturing sectors.

Total wholesale trade industries (pcuawhltrawhltr) and Total retail trade industries (pcuarettrarettr) - These are two new aggregate net output indexes that represent the net output for the wholesale trade sector and the retail trade sector.

Total trade industries (pcuatradeatrade) - This is another new cross sector aggregate index that represents the net output of the combined wholesale and retail trade sectors.

Transportation industries (pcuatransatrans) - This index is a sub-sector, net output aggregate index that represents the output of all the transportation industries. These industries are found in North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 48.

Delivery and warehouse industries (pcuadlvwradlvwr) - This index is a sub-sector, net output aggregate index that represents the combination of delivery service industries and the warehousing and storage industries. The delivery service industries include the US Postal Service, courier services, and local messenger services.

Transportation and warehousing industries (pcuatrnwratrnwr) - This index is a cross sector, net output aggregate index that represents the NAICS 48 and 49 industries.

Selected health care industries (pcuashc--ashc--) - This index is a net output aggregate index for all the health care services that are currently priced in the PPI. This index represents the net output of the NAICS 621, 622, and 623 sub-sectors covered by the PPI.

Information (pcuainfo-ainfo-) - This is a sector, net output aggregate index that represents the net output of the information sector. This index includes industry data from the NAICS sub-sectors 511, 515, 517, and 518 covered by the PPI.

Other selected traditional service industries (pcuastdsvastdsv) - This is a cross sector, net output aggregate index that represents the various service industries that are priced in the PPI but not included in other sector aggregations. The sectors and industries which are included in this index are:

  • Finance
  • Insurance
  • Administrative and support
  • Professional services
  • Real estate and rental and leasing
  • Amusement and recreation
  • Accommodation

Total traditional service industries (pcuattdsvattdsv) - This is a cross sector, net output aggregate index that represents the net output of all the services currently priced in the PPI, excluding trade services, transportation services, and warehouse services. The services in this aggregate index include the industry data aggregated into the selected health care, information, and other selected traditional service indexes.
