PPI Enhances the Indexes for Prescription and Non‐Prescription Pharmaceuticals

Effective with the release of Producer Price Index (PPI) data for January 2010, PPI expanded and re-coded the detailed publication structure for prescription and non-prescription pharmaceutical preparations. In the past, indexes tracking price changes for prescription and non-prescription pharmaceuticals were published as special industry indexes, coded 32541DRX and 32541DOTC. With the recent update, PPI moved all prescription and non-prescription detail to its commodity based index structure. This change enhances the quality of the prescription and non-prescription pharmaceuticals indexes by including all the price quotations PPI collects for these products. The industry-based method used from June 2001 through December 2009 employed most, but not all, of the price quotations for pharmaceuticals collected from North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 325412, the Pharmaceutical Preparation Manufacturing industry. The commodity based structure includes price quotations for pharmaceuticals regardless of industry of origin. By contrast, the industry based calculation only included prices from companies classified within NAICS 325412.

Wherever possible, the index histories for the previous industry indexes were linked to the new commodity indexes. These changes include:

SI07003, Pharmaceuticals for human use, prescription — This commodity index replaces industry index 32541DRX, Pharmaceutical preparations, prescription. The new special index, SI07003, is located in table 8 of the PPI Detailed Report. This index includes prescription pharmaceutical preparations classified in commodity index 0638, Pharmaceutical preparations.

SI07006, Pharmaceuticals for human use, non-prescription — This commodity index replaces industry index 32541DOTC, Pharmaceutical preparations, non-prescription. The new index, SI07006, is located in table 8 of the PPI Detailed Report. This index includes non-prescription (over-the-counter) pharmaceutical preparations classified in commodity index 0638, Pharmaceutical preparations.
