PPI Updates Structure of Hospital Indexes — NAICS 622110

Effective with the release of Producer Price Index (PPI) data for January 2018, the PPI program has modified the publication structure of indexes for General medical and surgical hospitals, North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code 622110. These indexes were formerly structured based on Major Diagnostic Categories (MDCs). With this update, the index structure for NAICS 622110 will be based on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD).

The ICD structure has several advantages over the MDC system, including the availability of Economic Census data by ICD code and comparability with other BLS products, such as the BLS disease-based price indexes. The move to the ICD structure also was recommended by the American Hospital Association, a national organization that serves roughly 5,000 hospitals and other health care providers.

Unfortunately, there is limited continuity between the MDC- and ICD-based index data. Table 1 lists the indexes that will continue to publish under the new structure, table 2 lists the MDC-based indexes which were discontinued, and table 3 identifies the newly introduced ICD-based indexes.
