Producer Price Indexes

PPI Durability of Product Indexes to be Discontinued
Effective with the release of Producer Price Index (PPI) data for January 2019 on February 14, 2019, Producer Price Indexes by Durability of Product, previously published in Table 12 of the PPI Detailed Report were discontinued. They were calculated using a former PPI methodology which was resource-intensive to maintain. Data requests for these indexes had declined significantly, indicating that sufficient interest no longer existed to justify the resources necessary to maintain them. Because the Durability of Product Indexes were subject to multiple-counting issues that the PPI’s Final Demand–Intermediate Demand (FD-ID) structure was designed to minimize, each Durability index may have multiple alternatives. Data users currently using PPI Durability indexes are encouraged to examine the following table of alternative FD-ID indexes to determine suitable alternatives.

With the elimination of the Durability indexes, the current PPI Detailed Report Table 13 (Producer price indexes for special commodity groupings) and Table 14 (Producer price indexes for net inputs to industries, excluding capital investment, labor, and imports) will become Tables 12 and 13, respectively.
