The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in the New York-Newark-Jersey City area rose 0.3 percent in February, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Regional Commissioner William J. Sibley noted that prices for all items less food and energy increased 0.3 percent over the month. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, month-to-month changes may reflect seasonal influences.)
The New York-Newark-Jersey City area all items CPI-U increased 4.2 percent for the 12 months ending in February. The index for all items less food and energy advanced 4.4 percent over the year. Food prices rose 2.7 percent. Energy prices advanced 4.9 percent.
FoodFood prices increased 0.5 percent for the month of February. Prices for food at home increased 0.7 percent, and prices for food away from home rose 0.4 percent. Within the food at home category, components with higher February prices included meats, poultry, fish, and eggs and cereals and bakery products. Components with lower prices included fruits and vegetables.
Food prices rose 2.7 percent over the year. Prices for food at home rose 2.6 percent, and prices for food away from home increased 2.8 percent.
EnergyThe energy index rose 0.7 percent over the month. Gasoline prices increased 0.4 percent.
Energy prices advanced 4.9 percent over the year. The gasoline index declined 4.8 percent.
All items less food and energyThe index for all items less food and energy increased 0.3 percent from January to February. Among the index’s components, prices were higher for shelter (+0.4 percent) and recreation (+1.3 percent). Within shelter, prices rose for owners’ equivalent rent (+0.3 percent), rent of primary residence (+0.3 percent), and lodging away from home. In contrast, indexes with price declines included airline fares and personal care.
Over the year, the index for all items less food and energy advanced 4.4 percent. Shelter prices rose 5.6 percent, reflecting price increases of 5.8 percent for owners’ equivalent rent and 5.1 percent for rent of primary residence. Other expenditure categories with higher prices were recreation (+9.1 percent) and education and communication (+3.5 percent).
The Consumer Price Index for March 2025 is scheduled to be released on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. (ET).

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for New York is published monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program. Each local index has a much smaller sample size than the national or regional indexes and is, therefore, subject to substantially more sampling and other measurement error. As a result, local-area indexes are more volatile than the national or regional indexes. In addition, local indexes are not adjusted for seasonal influences. NOTE: Area indexes do not measure differences in the level of prices between cities; they only measure the average change in prices for each area since the base period.
