The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in the New York-Newark-Jersey City area rose 0.4 percent in April, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Acting Regional Commissioner Mark J. Maggi noted that prices for all items less food and energy increased 0.6 percent over the month. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, month-to-month changes may reflect seasonal influences.)

The New York-Newark-Jersey City area all items CPI-U rose 3.9 percent for the 12 months ending in April. The index for all items less food and energy advanced 4.3 percent over the year. Food prices rose 1.8 percent. Energy prices increased 1.7 percent.

The food index declined 0.6 percent for the month of April. Prices for food at home decreased 1.2 percent, with lower prices recorded in four of the six major grocery categories. Prices for food away from home increased 0.3 percent.

Food prices rose 1.8 percent over the year. Prices for food away from home increased 3.0 percent, and prices for food at home increased 1.1 percent.

The energy index rose 1.1 percent over the month. Gasoline prices edged up 0.2 percent.

Energy prices increased 1.7 percent over the year. Gasoline prices fell 13.2 percent.

The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.6 percent in April. Shelter prices increased 0.6 percent as prices increased for owners’ equivalent rent (+0.3 percent), rent of primary residence (+0.4 percent), and lodging away from home. Prices for household furnishings and operations rose 3.8 percent.

Over the year, the index for all items less food and energy advanced 4.3 percent. A 5.5-percent increase in shelter prices included increases of 6.0 percent for owners’ equivalent rent and 5.5 percent for rent of primary residence. Prices also rose for recreation (+9.3 percent).

The Consumer Price Index for May 2025 is scheduled to be released on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. (ET).

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for New York is published monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program. Each local index has a much smaller sample size than the national or regional indexes and is, therefore, subject to substantially more sampling and other measurement error. As a result, local-area indexes are more volatile than the national or regional indexes. In addition, local indexes are not adjusted for seasonal influences. NOTE: Area indexes do not measure differences in the level of prices between cities; they only measure the average change in prices for each area since the base period.
