The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in the New York-Newark-Jersey City area advanced 0.7 percent in June after no change in May, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Acting Regional Commissioner Mark J. Maggi noted that prices increased for the energy index and the all items less food and energy index, while the food index was unchanged. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, month-to-month changes may reflect the impact of seasonal influences.)
The New York area all items CPI-U advanced 3.5 percent for the 12 months ending in June. The index for all items less food and energy rose 3.6 percent over the year, and food prices increased 2.3 percent. Energy prices advanced 3.9 percent.
FoodThe food index was unchanged from May to June, with the food at home index (grocery store purchases) remaining flat. Within the food at home group, groceries with higher prices included spices, seasonings, condiments, and sauces, as well as other beverage materials including tea. Prices were lower for carbonated drinks and eggs. Over the same period, prices for food away from home (restaurant, cafeteria, and vending purchases) inched up 0.1 percent.
The food index rose 2.3 percent over the year. The food away from home index increased 3.1 percent. Prices for food at home rose 1.8 percent, with higher prices recorded in 5 of 6 grocery categories.
EnergyThe energy index advanced 6.9 percent over the month. Gasoline prices rose 1.6 percent.
The energy index rose 3.9 percent from June 2024 to June 2025. Over the year, the gasoline index declined 11.3 percent.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for New York is published monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program. Each local index has a much smaller sample size than the national or regional indexes and is, therefore, subject to substantially more sampling and other measurement error. As a result, local-area indexes are more volatile than the national or regional indexes. In addition, local indexes are not adjusted for seasonal influences. NOTE: Area indexes do not measure differences in the level of prices between cities; they only measure the average change in prices for each area since the base period.
The New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA Core Based Statistical Area includes Bronx, Dutchess, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester Counties in New York; Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, and Union Counties in New Jersey; and Pike County in Pennsylvania.
Refer to the national CPI news release technical note or the Handbook of Methods for more information.
