Consumer Price Index, New York-Newark-Jersey City — July 2025

Area prices were unchanged over the month, up 3.2 percent over the year

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in the New York-Newark-Jersey City area was unchanged in July, following a 0.7-percent advance in June, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Acting Regional Commissioner Mark J. Maggi noted that July prices increased for food (+0.8 percent) and energy (+0.5 percent), while the all items less food and energy index ticked down 0.1 percent. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, month-to-month changes may reflect the impact of seasonal influences.)

The New York area all items CPI-U increased 3.2 percent for the 12 months ending in July. The index for all items less food and energy rose 3.1 percent over the year. Food prices advanced 3.4 percent, and energy prices increased 3.9 percent.

Food

The food index rose 0.8 percent in July after no change in June. Prices for food at home (grocery store purchases) advanced 1.1 percent, with increased prices in all six broad grocery categories. Included among the grocery items with higher July prices were fresh vegetables and carbonated drinks. Prices for food away from home (restaurant, cafeteria, and vending purchases) edged up 0.2 percent.

The food index increased 3.4 percent over the year. At-home food prices advanced 3.5 percent, and away-from-home food prices rose 3.4 percent.

Energy

The energy index increased 0.5 percent over the month. Gasoline prices rose 0.4 percent.

The energy index rose 3.9 percent for the year ending in July 2025. Gasoline prices fell 11.4 percent over the year.

The index for all items less food and energy inched down 0.1 percent in July. Apparel prices, often down in July, decreased 1.3 percent. Lower prices were also recorded for medical care and recreation, with each down 0.6 percent. Airline fares also fell during July. Prices for shelter were unchanged. Within shelter, owners’ equivalent rent edged up 0.2 percent, and rent of primary residence rose 0.3 percent, while prices for lodging away from home declined. July prices increased for education and communication (+0.4 percent), as well as for other goods and services (+1.3 percent).

The index for all items less food and energy increased 3.1 percent over the year. A 4.0-percent rise in shelter prices included higher owners’ equivalent rent (+4.1 percent) and rent of primary residence (+4.7 percent). Prices for education and communication increased 4.2 percent and included a 5.9-percent increase in tuition, other school fees, and childcare. Prices for household furnishings and operations increased 4.5 percent.

The August 2025 Consumer Price Index for the New York-Newark-Jersey City area is scheduled to be released on September 11, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. (ET).

Changes to the CPI

With this release, BLS has replaced survey data collected for the CPI's wireless telephone services index with secondary source data and non-traditional index methods.

Additional information is available on the CPI website, www.bls.gov/cpi/additional-resources/alternative-data-wireless-telephone.htm, and in a new factsheet "Measuring Price Change in the CPI: Wireless Telephone Services," www.bls.gov/cpi/factsheets/wireless-telephone-service.htm.

With the release of October 2025 data on November 13, 2025, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) will remove long-term care (LTC) insurance from the health insurance index. Changes in the market for LTC insurance have made it out of scope and ineligible for pricing in the CPI market basket.

Technical Note

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for New York is published monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program. Each local index has a much smaller sample size than the national or regional indexes and is, therefore, subject to substantially more sampling and other measurement error. As a result, local-area indexes are more volatile than the national or regional indexes. In addition, local indexes are not adjusted for seasonal influences. NOTE: Area indexes do not measure differences in the level of prices between cities; they only measure the average change in prices for each area since the base period.

The New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA Core Based Statistical Area includes Bronx, Dutchess, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester Counties in New York; Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, and Union Counties in New Jersey; and Pike County in Pennsylvania.

Refer to the national CPI news release technical note or the Handbook of Methods for more information.
