County Employment and Wages in New Hampshire — Fourth Quarter 2024
Employment rose in 1 of the 3 largest counties in New Hampshire—Rockingham County—from December 2023 to December 2024, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Acting Regional Commissioner Mark J. Maggi noted that Rockingham’s 0.3-percent employment increase ranked 221st among the 363 largest U.S. counties with published data. (See chart 1 and table 1.)

Among the three largest counties in New Hampshire, employment was highest in Hillsborough (203,400) in December 2024. Together, the three largest counties accounted for 63.4 percent of total covered employment within the state. Nationwide, the 369 largest counties comprise 73.3 percent of total covered employment in the United States. (Large counties and county equivalents are those with annual average employment levels of 75,000 or more in 2023.)
Large county average weekly wages in the fourth quarter 2024
All three large New Hampshire counties reported average weekly wage gains over the year. (See chart 2.) Rockingham had the largest gain (+4.0 percent), followed by Merrimack (+3.8 percent) and Hillsborough (+2.8 percent).

The weekly wage in Hillsborough ($1,626) was above the national average of $1,507. Average weekly wages in New Hampshire’s other two large counties, Rockingham ($1,503) and Merrimack ($1,437), were below the national average.
Smaller county average weekly wages in the fourth quarter of 2024
Employment and wage levels (but not over-the-year changes) are also available for the seven small counties in New Hampshire, defined as having employment below 75,000 in 2023. (See table 2.) Wage levels in all seven smaller counties were below the national average. Grafton reported the highest average weekly wage ($1,497). Coos reported the lowest average weekly wage ($1,061) in the state.
Among all 10 New Hampshire counties, 3 reported average weekly wages of less than $1,225, 3 registered wages from $1,225 to $1,349, 1 had wages from $1,350 to $1,474, and 3 had average weekly wages of $1,475 or higher. (See map 1 and table 2.)

The Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) is streamlining its release process. Beginning with the fourth quarter 2024 national release on June 4, QCEW will publish the national County Employment and Wages news release on the same date as the QCEW full data update.
