Consumer Price Index, New York-Newark-Jersey City — May 2026

Area prices up 0.4 percent over the month, 5.1 percent over the year

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) for New York-Newark-Jersey City increased 0.4 percent in May after advancing 1.0 percent in April, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported today. The all items less food and energy index and the energy index increased while the food index decreased. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, month-to-month changes may reflect the impact of seasonal influences.)

The New York area all items CPI-U rose 5.1 percent for the 12 months ending in May. Regional Commissioner Mark J. Maggi noted that the last time the change exceeded 5.0 percent was in February 2023. The index for all items less food and energy rose 3.9 percent, and the energy index advanced 26.9 percent. The food index increased 3.7 percent over the same period.

Food

The food index fell 0.5 percent in May, following a 1.0-percent rise in April. Prices for food at home (grocery store purchases) declined 1.1 percent, with lower prices in all six major grocery store food groups. In contrast, prices for food away from home (restaurant, cafeteria, and vending purchases) advanced 0.5 percent.

The food index rose 3.7 percent over the year. Higher prices in 5 of the 6 grocery categories contributed to a 4.0-percent increase in prices for food at home. Prices for food away from home were up 3.2 percent.

Energy

The energy index increased 1.7 percent in May. Gasoline prices increased 10.5 percent, following increases of 13.5 percent in April and 21.4 percent in March.

From May 2025 to May 2026, the energy index rose 26.9 percent. The gasoline index was up 46.8 percent.

All items less food and energy

The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.5 percent in May. Higher prices for owners’ equivalent rent (+0.8 percent), rent of primary residence (+0.4 percent), and lodging away from home contributed to a 0.9-percent increase in shelter. Airline fares also rose over the month.

Over the year, the index for all items less food and energy increased 3.9 percent. A 4.8-percent increase in shelter prices included increases for owners’ equivalent rent (+4.8 percent), rent of primary residence (+4.4 percent), and lodging away from home.

The Consumer Price Index for June 2026 is scheduled to be released on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. (ET).

Technical Note

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for New York is published monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program. Each local index has a much smaller sample size than the national or regional indexes and is, therefore, subject to substantially more sampling and other measurement error. As a result, local-area indexes are more volatile than the national or regional indexes. In addition, local indexes are not adjusted for seasonal influences. NOTE: Area indexes do not measure differences in the level of prices between cities; they only measure the average change in prices for each area since the base period.

The New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA Core Based Statistical Area includes Bronx, Dutchess, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester Counties in New York; Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, and Union Counties in New Jersey; and Pike County in Pennsylvania.

Refer to the national CPI news release technical note or the Handbook of Methods for more information.
