Consumer Price Index, New York-Newark-Jersey City — July 2026

Area prices up 0.5 percent over the month, 4.6 percent over the year

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) for New York-Newark-Jersey City was up 0.5 percent in July, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported today. Regional Commissioner Mark J. Maggi noted that over the month, the index for all items less food and energy and the index for food each rose 0.5 percent, while the energy index inched up 0.1 percent. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, month-to-month changes may reflect the impact of seasonal influences.)

The New York area all items CPI-U advanced 4.6 percent for the 12 months ending in July. The index for all items less food and energy rose 4.0 percent. Over the same period, the energy index increased 15.7 percent, while the food index increased 3.4 percent.

Food

Food prices rose 0.5 percent for the month of July. The index for food at home (grocery store purchases) rose 0.4 percent, with higher prices in 5 of the 6 major grocery store food groups. The food away from home index (restaurant, cafeteria, and vending purchases) rose 0.6 percent.

The food index rose 3.4 percent over the year. Higher prices in all six major grocery store food groups contributed to a 3.3-percent increase in prices for food at home. Prices for food away from home advanced 3.6 percent.

Energy

The energy index ticked up 0.1 percent in July. Gasoline prices declined 3.0 percent.

The energy index increased 15.7 percent from July 2025 to July 2026. Over the year, the gasoline index rose 29.3 percent.

All items less food and energy

The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.5 percent over the month. Higher prices for owners’ equivalent rent (+0.6 percent) and rent of primary residence (+0.5 percent) contributed to a 0.5-percent increase in the shelter index. Other categories with July price increases included recreation (+1.7 percent), education and communication (+0.9 percent), and intracity transportation.

The index for all items less food and energy advanced 4.0 percent over the year. A 4.8-percent rise in shelter prices included increases in owners’ equivalent rent (+4.9 percent) and rent of primary residence (+4.3 percent). Airline fares also rose over the year.

The Consumer Price Index for August 2026 is scheduled to be released on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. (ET).

Technical Note

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for New York is published monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program. Each local index has a much smaller sample size than the national or regional indexes and is, therefore, subject to substantially more sampling and other measurement error. As a result, local-area indexes are more volatile than the national or regional indexes. In addition, local indexes are not adjusted for seasonal influences. NOTE: Area indexes do not measure differences in the level of prices between cities; they only measure the average change in prices for each area since the base period.

The New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA Core Based Statistical Area includes Bronx, Dutchess, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester Counties in New York; Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, and Union Counties in New Jersey; and Pike County in Pennsylvania.

Refer to the national CPI news release technical note or the Handbook of Methods for more information.
