Total nonfarm employment for the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area stood at 2,669,200 in May 2018, up 23,400, or 0.9 percent, over the year, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Regional Commissioner Janet S. Rankin noted that the Miami area has had over-the-year employment gains each month since October 2017. (See chart 1 and table 1; the Technical Note at the end of this release contains metropolitan area definitions. All data in this release are not seasonally adjusted; accordingly, over-the-year analysis is used throughout.)
The Miami area is made up of three metropolitan divisions—separately identifiable employment centers within the larger metropolitan area. All three divisions gained jobs over the year. Miami-Miami Beach-Kendall, the largest of the three divisions with 45 percent of the area’s employment, added 12,100 jobs from May a year ago. The Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach Division, which accounted for 32 percent of Miami area’s workforce, gained 10,600 jobs, while the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton-Delray Beach Division added 700 jobs over the 12-month period.
Industry employmentConstruction had the largest over-the-year increase in the local area in May 2018, adding 13,600 jobs. All three metropolitan divisions gained construction jobs from May 2017, with the largest increase in the Miami metropolitan division (+6,300). The supersector’s local rate of job growth, at 10.5 percent, was more than double the 4.2-percent gain nationally. (See chart 2.)
Manufacturing in the local area added 8,300 jobs in May 2018, up 9.3 percent from May 2017. Over 86 percent of growth in this supersector occurred in the Miami metropolitan division (+7,200). Nationally, jobs in manufacturing were up 2.1 percent from May 2017.
Two other supersectors in the Miami area gained at least 1,500 jobs since last May. The area’s trade, transportation, and utilities supersector gained 3,100 jobs, up 0.5 percent; nationwide, employment in this supersector rose 1.3 percent over the year. Financial activities added 1,500 jobs in the local area. The 0.8-percent rate of local job growth was less than the national gain of 1.5 percent.
Two industry supersectors in the Miami area had employment declines of at least 1,000 from May 2017 to May 2018. Education and health services lost 1,800 jobs, down 0.5 percent. Local industry sector losses were focused in the West Palm Beach area (-4,000). Nationwide, education and health services added jobs since May 2017, increasing 1.9 percent. Information posted the second largest loss of jobs in the Miami area, down 1,200 or -2.3 percent. Nationally, this industry lost jobs over the 12-month period, decreasing 0.6 percent.
Employment in the 12 largest metropolitan areasMiami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach was 1 of the nation’s 12 largest metropolitan statistical areas in May 2018. All 12 areas had over-the-year job growth during the period, with the rates of job growth in five areas exceeding the national increase of 1.6 percent. Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington had the fastest rate of job growth, up 3.4 percent, followed by Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale (3.1 percent). Chicago-Naperville-Elgin had the slowest rate of job growth, 0.8 percent, followed by Miami (0.9 percent). (See chart 3 and table 2.)
Dallas added the largest number of jobs over the year, 122,000, followed by New York-Newark-Jersey City (+116,200). Miami had the smallest employment gain of 23,400 jobs. Annual gains in the remaining nine metropolitan areas ranged from 81,200 in Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim to 38,600 in Chicago.
Over the year, professional and business services added the most jobs in five areas: Boston-Cambridge-Nashua, Dallas, Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, and Washington-Arlington-Alexandria. Education and health services added the most jobs in three areas: New York, Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, and Phoenix.
The information supersector lost the most jobs in five areas. Dallas and Phoenix were the only metropolitan areas to have no annual job losses in any supersector.
Metropolitan area employment data for June 2018 are scheduled to be released on Friday, July 20, 2018.
This release presents nonfarm payroll employment estimates from the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program. The CES survey is a Federal-State cooperative endeavor between State employment security agencies and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Definitions. Employment data refer to persons on establishment payrolls who receive pay for any part of the pay period which includes the 12th of the month. Persons are counted at their place of work rather than at their place of residence; those appearing on more than one payroll are counted on each payroll. Industries are classified on the basis of their principal activity in accordance with the 2017 version of the North American Industry Classification System.
Method of estimation. CES State and Area employment data are produced using several estimation procedures. Where possible these data are produced using a "weighted link relative" estimation technique in which a ratio of current-month weighted employment to that of the previous-month weighted employment is computed from a sample of establishments reporting for both months. The estimates of employment for the current month are then obtained by multiplying these ratios by the previous month's employment estimates. The weighted link relative technique is utilized for data series where the sample size meets certain statistical criteria.
Annual revisions. Employment estimates are adjusted annually to a complete count of jobs, called benchmarks, derived principally from tax reports which are submitted by employers who are covered under state unemployment insurance (UI) laws. The benchmark information is used to adjust the monthly estimates between the new benchmark and the preceding one and also to establish the level of employment for the new benchmark month. Thus, the benchmarking process establishes the level of employment, and the sample is used to measure the month-to-month changes in the level for the subsequent months.
Reliability of the estimates. The estimates presented in this release are based on sample survey and administrative data and thus are subject to sampling and other types of errors. Sampling error is a measure of sampling variability—that is, variation that occurs by chance because a sample rather than the entire population is surveyed. Survey data are also subject to nonsampling errors, such as those which can be introduced into the data collection and processing operations. Estimates not directly derived from sample surveys are subject to additional errors resulting from the special estimation processes used. The sums of individual items may not always equal the totals shown in the same tables because of rounding.
