The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) for Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell increased 0.9 percent for the 12 months ending December, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported today. Regional Commissioner Victoria G. Lee noted that the food index rose 5.0 percent over the last 12 months. The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.2 percent for the 12 months ending December. The energy index rose 1.2 percent over the last year.

BLS did not collect survey data for October 2025 due to a lapse in appropriations. BLS is unable to retroactively collect these data. For a few indexes, BLS uses nonsurvey data sources instead of survey data to make the index calculations. BLS was able to retroactively acquire most of the nonsurvey data for October. Accordingly, all analysis in this release is over the year and not seasonally adjusted.

The index for food increased 5.0 percent over the last 12 months. The index for food away from home (restaurant, cafeteria, and vending purchases) advanced 7.4 percent over the past year. The index for food at home (grocery store purchases) rose 3.4 percent over the same period. Prices increased in 5 of the 6 major grocery store food groups, including meats, poultry, fish, and eggs (+7.8 percent).

The energy index increased 1.2 percent over the past 12 months. The gasoline index declined 4.8 percent over this 12-month span.

The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.2 percent over the past 12 months. The shelter index increased 1.1 percent over the last year, due in part to a 2.5 percent increase in the index for owners’ equivalent rent. The index for household furnishings and operations (+6.4 percent) was also among the notable indexes to increase over the last 12 months.

The Consumer Price Index for January 2026 is scheduled to be released on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. (ET). The February 2026 Consumer Price Index for the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell area is scheduled to be released on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. (ET).

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for Atlanta is published bi-monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program. Each local index has a much smaller sample size than the national or regional indexes and is, therefore, subject to substantially more sampling and other measurement error. As a result, local-area indexes are more volatile than the national or regional indexes. In addition, local indexes are not adjusted for seasonal influences. NOTE: Area indexes do not measure differences in the level of prices between cities; they only measure the average change in prices for each area since the base period.

The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Core Based Statistical Area includes Barrow, Bartow, Butts, Carroll, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Haralson, Heard, Henry, Jasper, Lamar, Meriwether, Morgan, Newton, Paulding, Pickens, Pile, Rockdale, Spalding, and Walton Counties in Georgia.
