Consumer Price Index, Honolulu Area — November 2024

Area prices were up 0.1 percent over the past two months, up 3.5 percent from a year ago

Prices in the Honolulu area, as measured by the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), increased 0.1 percent for the two months ending in November 2024, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. (See table A.) Regional Commissioner Chris Rosenlund noted that the November increase was influenced by higher prices for shelter. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, bi-monthly changes may reflect seasonal influences.)

Over the last 12 months, the CPI-U advanced 3.5 percent. (See chart 1 and table A.) Food prices advanced 3.1 percent. Energy prices declined 5.1 percent, largely the result of a decrease in the price of electricity. The index for all items less food and energy rose 4.4 percent over the year. (See table 1.)

Food

Food prices increased 0.1 percent for the two months ending in November. (See table 1.) Prices for food at home decreased 0.6 percent, led by lower prices for fruits and vegetables (-1.4 percent) and meats, poultry, fish, and eggs (-1.3 percent). Prices for food away from home increased 1.0 percent for the same period.

Over the year, food prices advanced 3.1 percent. Prices for food at home increased 1.7 percent since a year ago, with higher prices in four of the six grocery categories. Prices for food away from home increased 4.9 percent.

Energy

The energy index decreased 2.4 percent for the two months ending in November. The decrease was mainly due to lower prices for electricity (-5.2 percent). Prices for gasoline declined 0.6 percent, while prices for natural gas service rose 3.6 percent for the same period.

Energy prices declined 5.1 percent over the year, largely due to lower prices for electricity (-7.8 percent). Prices paid for natural gas service declined 5.8 percent, and prices for gasoline decreased 3.1 percent during the past year.

All items less food and energy

The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.3 percent in the latest two-month period. Higher prices for other goods and services (4.7 percent) and shelter (0.5 percent) were partially offset by lower prices for apparel (-8.1 percent) and education and communication (-2.5 percent).

Over the year, the index for all items less food and energy rose 4.4 percent. Components contributing to the increase included shelter (6.4 percent) and recreation (3.4 percent). Partly offsetting the increases were price decreases in used cars and trucks (-2.9 percent) and education and communication (-1.7 percent).

  • Energy services
  • Fuels and utilities

Technical Note

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for Urban Hawaii is published bi-monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program. Each local index has a much smaller sample size than the national or regional indexes and is, therefore, subject to substantially more sampling and other measurement error. As a result, local-area indexes are more volatile than the national or regional indexes. In addition, local indexes are not adjusted for seasonal influences. NOTE: Area indexes do not measure differences in the level of prices between cities; they only measure the average change in prices for each area since the base period.

The Urban Hawaii Core Based Statistical Area includes Honolulu County in the State of Hawaii.

Refer to the national CPI news release technical note or the Handbook of Methods for more information.
