County Employment and Wages in Arizona— Fourth Quarter 2024
Employment rose in 1 of the 2 largest counties in Arizona from December 2023 to December 2024, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Regional Commissioner Chris Rosenlund noted that Maricopa County had an over-the-year increase in employment of 1.0 percent, while Pima County reported a decrease of 0.2 percent. (See chart 1 and table 1.)

Among the two largest counties in Arizona, employment was highest in Maricopa (2,312,600) in December 2024. Employment in Pima was 390,800. Together, the two largest counties accounted for 82.6 percent of total covered employment within the state. Nationwide, the 369 largest counties comprise 73.3 percent of total covered employment in the United States. (Large counties and county equivalents are those with annual average employment levels of 75,000 or more in 2023.)
Large county average weekly wages in the fourth quarter of 2024
Both Arizona large counties reported average weekly wage gains over the year. (See chart 2.) Maricopa had the largest gain (+6.8 percent). The average weekly wage in Pima rose 3.9 percent over the year.

Weekly wages in Maricopa ($1,475) and Pima ($1,242) were below the national average of $1,507.
Smaller county average weekly wages in the fourth quarter of 2024
Employment and wage levels (but not over-the-year changes) are also available for the 13 small counties in Arizona, defined as having employment below 75,000 in 2023. (See table 2.) Wage levels in 12 of the 13 smaller counties were below the national average. Greenlee reported the highest average weekly wage ($1,610). La Paz reported the lowest average weekly wage ($1,010) in the state.
Among all 15 Arizona counties, 3 reported average weekly wages of less than $1,050, 5 registered wages from $1,050 to $1,124, 3 had wages from $1,125 to $1,199, and 4 had average weekly wages of $1,200 or higher. (See map 1 and table 2.)
