County Employment and Wages in Idaho — Fourth Quarter 2024
Employment rose in both of Idaho’s large counties from December 2023 to December 2024, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Regional Commissioner Chris Rosenlund noted that Ada County had an over-the-year employment increase of 0.8 percent, while Canyon County reported an increase of 0.1 percent. (See chart 1 and table 1.)

Among the two largest counties in Idaho, employment was highest in Ada (289,600) in December 2024. Employment in Canyon County was 89,200. Together, the two largest counties accounted for 44.1 percent of total covered employment within the state. Nationwide, the 369 largest counties comprise 73.3 percent of total covered employment in the United States. (Large counties and county equivalents are those with annual average employment levels of 75,000 or more in 2023.)
Large county average weekly wages in the fourth quarter 2024
Both Idaho large counties reported average weekly wage gains over the year. (See chart 2.) Ada had the largest gain (+12.6 percent). The average weekly wage in Canyon rose 4.8 percent over the year.

The weekly wage in Ada ($1,514) was above the national average of $1,507. The average weekly wage was $1,049 in Canyon.
Smaller county average weekly wages in the fourth quarter of 2024
Employment and wage levels (but not over-the-year changes) are also available for the 42 small counties in Idaho, defined as having employment below 75,000 in 2023. (See table 2.) Wage levels in 41 of the 42 smaller counties were below the national average. Butte reported the highest average weekly wage ($2,306). Boise reported the lowest average weekly wage ($775) in the state.
Among all 44 Idaho counties, 7 reported average weekly wages of less than $900, 16 registered wages from $900 to $999, 12 had wages from $1,000 to $1,099, and 9 had average weekly wages of $1,100 or higher. (See map 1 and table 2.)

The Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) is streamlining its release process.
