Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey: Information for Survey Participants

The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) is a monthly indicator of the need for workers in the US economy. Your voluntary participation is highly valued and will help provide businesses and the American public with information critical in planning for future economic growth and success. JOLTS is responsible for compiling job openings and turnover (hires and separations) data from thousands of firms like yours. Without the generous cooperation of the people who participate in our surveys, we could not fulfill our mission to provide vital information about our economy. We thank you. The information you provide will only be used for statistical purposes and will be protected to the fullest extent permitted by law.

Ways to report your data

  • Web — data submission online
    • JOLTSlite — https://joltsdata.bls.gov/JOLTS

Respondents use their nine-digit report number(s) to access the reporting site and enter data directly into the JOLTS system. Users can also update their respondent information, download forms, access data definitions, and contact the national help desk at joltswebhelp@bls.gov.

    • JOLTSPro — https://idcf.bls.gov/authentication/login

Respondents register for this reporting option and establish a permanent account number and password. Respondents log on monthly and enter data for all their report numbers onto a single spreadsheet form. In addition to the options provided by Weblite, JOLTSPro allows respondents to:

      • access location information for each report
      • view or update the previous month’s data
      • copy and paste data from external sources
      • access data definitions and sort columns
      • address errors when data are flagged as invalid
      • address warnings by correcting potentially incorrect data
      • address warnings by providing reasons for data fluctuation
      • download a record of the data submission in Excel

JOLTSPro provides the most comprehensive reporting features. Please contact joltswebhelp@bls.gov for more information.

  • Email — data submission by email

Respondents send their data directly in response to an email reminder to report. Data can come in the body of the email response or as an attachment. Attachments are ideal for respondents who submit data for a large number of locations. JOLTS Data Collection Center representatives enter the data in the JOLTS system.

  • Telephone — data collection interview by phone

Respondents provide data to JOLTS representatives during a scheduled monthly call. A data collector initiates the collection call and enters the data into the JOLTS system.

Reminders and data verification contact

The JOLTS team is mindful of your limited time during business hours and grateful for your voluntary contribution. It is important that we receive data within the first two weeks of the month so that the data will factor into the calculation of estimates for the next JOLTS release. For this reason, we send you emails reminding you of upcoming data collection calls or requesting that you submit your data via web or email. Once you report, you will not receive a reminder until the next month’s data are due. However, you may receive up to four reminders if we have not received data during those first 11-13 business days of the month. Additionally, JOLTS screens all reported data, so respondents may receive follow-up calls or emails with questions about data that have been reported.

Note: The JOLTSPro option to provide a reason for irregular data often helps respondents to avoid follow-up calls and emails.
