Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) System Updates

On behalf of the Standard Occupational Classification Policy Committee (SOCPC), “Options for defining STEM occupations under the 2018 SOC” are available at https://www.bls.gov/soc/2018/#crosswalks. The SOCPC developed this material to enhance the comparability of analyses and information provided by federal statistical agencies and other organizations on the size and characteristics of the STEM workforce. These alternatives are not intended to establish any required definition, but to provide users with alternatives based on the 2018 Standard Occupational Classification (SOC). The SOCPC is an interagency group chaired by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and advises OMB on the development of the SOC, which is used by Federal statistical agencies to classify workers into occupational categories for the purpose of collecting, calculating, or disseminating data. Further information about the SOC is available at www.bls.gov/soc.
