Comparison of 2023 CPI data using new weights and previous weights

Starting with January 2023 data, BLS updated weights annually for the Consumer Price Index based on a single calendar year of data, using consumer expenditure data from 2021. This reflects a change from prior practice of updating weights biennially using 2 years of expenditure data.

Table 1 compares the index values for January 2023 using the “new” weights (the official indexes based on the 2021 expenditure data) with the “old” weights (what the index values and percentages would be had the previous weights from 2019-2020 remained in place). Table 2 shows the same comparison, but for 1-month not seasonally adjusted percent changes. Table 3 shows a similar comparison for March 2023 index values, and table 4 compares 3-month not seasonally adjusted percent changes. Table 5 shows a similar comparison for June 2023 index values, and table 6 compares 6-month not seasonally adjusted percent changes.

For item strata (for example, full service meals and snacks), difference in index movements from the different weights result from differences in the geographic weights. For aggregate indexes (for example, food at home), differences may result from the differing weights of the subcomponents of the aggregate.
