The data for the detailed Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander groups are not seasonally adjusted. For estimates that are not seasonally adjusted, an over-the-year comparison is recommended rather than comparing one month to the following month or one quarter to the following quarter. (Seasonal adjustment is a statistical procedure that removes the effects of normal seasonal variations from time series estimates.)
One must exercise caution when analyzing and interpreting monthly and quarterly data for the Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander group because their share of the U.S. population is small and estimates for this group are based on small sample sizes. These data can be noisy, as estimates produced from smaller sample sizes are associated with larger margins of error. Using quarterly averages instead of monthly estimates, or annual averages instead of quarterly averages, can reduce the volatility in these time series.
