Labor Force Statistics from the Current Population Survey

New population controls will be incorporated in the Current Population Survey with the release of January 2025 estimates on February 7, 2025

The U.S. Census Bureau announced updates to official population estimates (Vintage 2024) on December 19, 2024.

Effective with the release of The Employment Situation for January 2025 on February 7, 2025, new population controls will be incorporated in the Current Population Survey (CPS) estimation process that reflect the annual update of population estimates by the Census Bureau. In accordance with usual practice, historical data will not be revised to incorporate the new controls. Consequently, household survey data for January 2025 will not be directly comparable with data for December 2024 or earlier periods. Initial information about the impact of the updated population controls will be published with the January 2025 estimates. This will allow users to understand the effect of the new population controls on the change in selected labor force measures between December 2024 and January 2025.

Conceptually, the effects of the annual population control adjustments represent cumulative over- or under-estimation of the population since the last population base, the 2020 blended base. In particular, the recent updates to the Census Bureau’s official population estimates include new estimates of net international migration for recent years.

As detailed information about how the Census Bureau’s updates to the population estimates affect the civilian noninstitutionalized population age 16 and over—the universe for the CPS—becomes available, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) will evaluate the extent to which these changes impact historical labor force estimates from the CPS.  This evaluation, which may take some time, will enable BLS to determine if revisions to historical data are practicable.
