Producer Price Index for Postsecondary Education

Jason Carnival, Christine Darabaris, and Allison Ramage

Abstract

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is developing a new Producer Price Index (PPI) for Postsecondary Education. This index combines Junior Colleges (NAICS 611210) and Colleges, Universities, and Professional Schools (NAICS 611310) into the BLS-created NAICS 611810 and comprises both private (for-profit and not-for-profit) and public institutions offering diplomas and certificates below the baccalaureate level, at the baccalaureate level, and at graduate levels. This paper provides a detailed background of the industry, illustrates how the index will be structured, and goes on to describe the methodological approach to creating a Postsecondary Education index. It also includes preliminary analytical index results.
