With the release of Producer Price Index (PPI) data for October 2016 on November 16, 2016, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) introduced indexes for natural gas distribution by region into the official PPI aggregation structures. Geographic PPIs for natural gas distribution are useful because prices in this industry tend to change based on local market conditions that result from differences in demand, infrastructure, and weather.
The existing structure of PPIs for natural gas distribution to the ultimate consumer are subdivided into residential, commercial, and industrial users. With this release, PPIs have been added under each type of buyer to provide further detail of price changes by geographical region, as defined by U.S. Census Bureau Divisions (PDF).
The regional natural gas distribution PPIs were first published on this webpage as experimental with the release of PPI data for July 2014. Since they are now part of the official PPI aggregation structures, the previously available experimental versions have been discontinued.
The weights for the natural gas distribution indexes are derived primarily from value-of-shipments data, currently from the 2007 U.S. Census Bureau Economic Census. Industry value-of-shipment data are used for industry PPI weights and wherever-made shipment data are used for commodity PPI weights. Secondary source data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) are used to weight the residential, commercial, and industrial sector indexes for both industry and commodity PPI series. Weights for the regional natural gas distribution indexes are calculated based on EIA price and consumption data by region.
PPI data for regional natural gas distribution appear monthly in the PPI Detailed Report and historical data are available on the BLS website by clicking the Series ID links in the tables below or through PPI databases. The expanded structures of PPI by commodity (Table 1) and industry (Table 2) are listed below. Most of the regional natural gas distribution PPIs include data back to June 2012. Regional PPIs marked with * begin in September 2016.
