PPI Introduces Regional Indexes for New Nonresidential Building Construction

With the release of Producer Price Index (PPI) data for November 2016 on December 14, 2016, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) introduced two regionally-based PPI special index structures under industry data for new nonresidential building construction. (Geographical regions are based on U.S. Census Bureau Divisions (PDF).)

236400 — New nonresidential building construction by contractor type and region
236500 — New nonresidential building construction by region

Similar to the existing PPI for nonresidential building maintenance and repair (PPI industry code 2381MR), the new indexes are calculated by re-aggregating selected existing PPI pricing information for the following types of new nonresidential structures: warehouses, schools, office buildings, industrial buildings, and health care buildings.

For the 236400 index structure, the aggregation is first organized by contractor type (general, concrete, roofing, electrical, and plumbing/HVAC) and then by region (Northeast, South, Midwest, and West). This structure is intended for data users looking to obtain regional PPI data by contractor type. (See table 1.)

The 236500 index structure aggregates PPIs by contractor type for each region. These indexes are intended for data users interested in the overall price movement for new nonresidential building construction within a specific region. (See table 2.)

In addition, the topline indexes for both structures provide a national level PPI for new nonresidential building construction through the aggregation of their components.

PPI data for these indexes appear monthly in the PPI Detailed Report and historical data are available on the BLS website by clicking the Series ID links in the tables below or through PPI Industry Data under PPI databases. Data for these new indexes are available back to February 2014.
