Consumer Price Index, Baltimore-Columbia-Towson – December 2024

Area prices were down 0.4 percent over the past 2 months, up 3.4 percent from a year ago

Prices in the Baltimore-Columbia-Towson area, as measured by the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), decreased 0.4 percent for the 2 months ending in December 2024, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Regional Commissioner Alexandra Hall Bovee noted the decline was the first of the year and was influenced by price decreases in the energy and the all items less food and energy indexes. The food index was up 0.1 percent in the same period. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, bi-monthly changes may reflect the impact of seasonal influences.) (See table A.)

Over the last 12 months, the CPI-U rose 3.4 percent, mostly due to a 4.0-percent rise in the all items less food and energy index. The food index was up 2.9 percent, and the energy index decreased 2.6 percent. (See chart 1 and table 1.)

Food

Food prices increased 0.1 percent for the 2 months ending in December 2024, as did prices for food away from home. The food at home index was unchanged with the grocery categories being a mix of increases and decreases. Prices for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs were up 0.9 percent, well below this year’s high of 3.7 percent seen in October. Offsetting the higher grocery prices, were lower prices for fruits and vegetables (-3.2 percent), and cereals and bakery products (-2.6 percent).

Over the year, the food index rose 2.9 percent as prices for food away from home were up 3.8 percent. The food at home index increased 2.2 percent due to higher prices for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs (7.4 percent); nonalcoholic beverages and beverage materials (4.3 percent); and cereals and bakery products (3.2 percent). In the same period, prices for fruits and vegetables declined 3.0 percent, and dairy and related products decreased 2.2 percent.

Energy

In the two months ending in December, the energy index decreased 3.4 percent. The energy index decline was mainly due to falling prices for gasoline, down 8.2 percent. Prices for electricity were unchanged, and prices for utility (piped) gas service increased 9.2 percent for the same period.

From December 2023 to December 2024 the energy index declined 2.6 percent due largely to the gasoline index decreasing 7.9 percent. Offsetting the energy index decline were higher prices for electricity and natural gas service, up 1.8 percent and 20.1 percent, respectively.

All items less food and energy

The index for all items less food and energy was down 0.2 percent in the two months ending in December 2024. Lower prices for apparel (-7.9 percent), education and communication (-1.3 percent), and shelter (-0.3 percent) — due to lower prices for lodging away from home — led the overall index decline. Tempering the decreases were price increases in recreation and household furnishings and operations, up 1.5 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively.

Over the year, the all items less food and energy index advanced 4.0 percent, led by a 3.7-percent increase in the shelter index. Within shelter, a 3.6-percent rise in the owners’ equivalent rent of residences index, a 4.4-percent rise in the rent of primary residence index, and higher prices for lodging away from home contributed to the shelter index increase. Also contributing to the increase was the recreation index (5.4 percent) and the medical care index (3.1 percent) — due to higher prices for medical care services). Other goods and services rose 8.1 percent in the same period. Partially tempering the all items less food and energy index rise was the apparel index (-2.5 percent), and the new and used motor vehicles index, down 0.9 percent. Within the new and used motor vehicle index, prices for used cars and trucks fell 2.1 percent, continuing a two-year trend of price decreases that started in December 2022, and new vehicle prices decreased 0.2 percent. The education and communication index declined 0.4 percent, the first over-the-year decrease since December 2022 (-0.2 percent), and the largest 12-month decline since September 2011 (-1.0 percent).

Technical Note

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for Baltimore-Columbia-Towson is published bi-monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program. Each local index has a much smaller sample size than the national or regional indexes and is, therefore, subject to substantially more sampling and other measurement error. As a result, local-area indexes are more volatile than the national or regional indexes. In addition, local indexes are not adjusted for seasonal influences. NOTE: Area indexes do not measure differences in the level of prices between cities; they only measure the average change in prices for each area since the base period.

The Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD, Core Based Statistical Area includes Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, Howard, and Queen Anne’s counties, as well as Baltimore City, in Maryland.

Refer to the national CPI news release technical note or the Handbook of Methods for more information.
