Consumer Price Index, Northeast region — April 2025

Regional prices were up 0.3 percent in April, up 3.1 percent over the year

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in the Northeast region increased 0.3 percent in April, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The index for all items less food and energy also rose 0.4 percent in April. Energy remained unchanged over-the-month while food prices decreased 0.2 percent in the same period. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, month-to-month changes may reflect the impact of seasonal influences.)

The Northeast all items CPI-U advanced 3.1 percent for the 12 months ending in April. The index for all items less food and energy advanced 3.5 percent over the year, accounting for over ninety percent of the twelve-month all items increase. Food prices rose 2.2 percent and energy prices decreased 0.2 percent over the year.

Food

Food prices decreased 0.2 percent in April. The index for food away from home was up 0.6 percent for the same period. The index for food at home was down 0.6 percent, with lower prices in 5 of the 6 major food groups— including prices for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs (-1.0 percent). Within the food at home category, food groups that had price decreases over the month included eggs and spices, seasonings, condiments, sauces.

Food prices rose 2.2 percent over the year. The index for food away from home advanced 4.0 percent, while the index for food at home increased 1.1 percent. Much of the rise in the food at home index came from a 5.9-percent advance in prices for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs and a 5.8-percent increase in nonalcoholic beverages and beverage materials prices.

Energy

The energy index remained unchanged over the month, as did the electricity index. The utility (piped) gas service index advanced 1.6 percent, and the gasoline index rose 0.8 percent in the same period.

The energy index decreased 0.2 percent from April 2024 to April 2025. The utility (piped) gas service index advanced 20.8 percent, and the electricity index rose 9.0 percent. Gasoline declined 11.6 percent over the year.

All items less food and energy

The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.4 percent in April. The index for shelter was up 0.7 percent as all its components rose, including owners’ equivalent rent of residences (+0.3 percent). For the same period, household furnishings and operations increased 1.2 percent. New and used motor vehicles increased 0.9 percent. Prices for apparel and recreation were down 1.7 percent and 0.7 percent respectively.

The index for all items less food and energy advanced 3.5 percent over the year, led by a 5.3-percent increase in prices for shelter. Within the shelter category, the rent of primary residence index was up 5.6 percent, and the owners’ equivalent rent of residences index rose 5.5 percent. Other price increases for all items less food and energy encompassed the recreation index (+2.9 percent), medical care (+2.1 percent) and education and communication (+2.1 percent).

The Consumer Price Index for May 2025 is scheduled to be released on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. (ET).

Technical Note

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for the Northeast region is published monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program.

Percent changes for all-items data previously found in Table A of this release can be accessed in Chart 1 for this release and its attendant data table. A full all-items data series history for the original index value and for 1-month, 2-month, 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month percent changes can be accessed via BLS data query tools. A direct link to the all-items series is provided in Table 1 of this release under historical data.

The Northeast region is comprised of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Refer to the national CPI news release technical note or the Handbook of Methods for more information.
