The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is the principal Federal agency responsible for measuring labor market activity, working conditions, and prices changes in the economy. Its mission is to collect, analyze, and disseminate economic information to support public and private decision-making.

This conference will give current BLS data users and future data users the opportunity to speak with BLS economists and learn more about the economic data series we produce. Producer Price Index Senior Economists will present two in-depth sessions on the PPI, to provide an understanding of selected topics within the program.

Opening Remarks for the conference will given by Patrick T. Harker, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, and Erica Groshen, Commissioner of Labor Statistics for the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Special guest speakers for the conference will be BLS senior economists Jeffrey Hill, Jonathan Weinhagen, Kelley Khatchadourian, and Melanie Santiago, from the Producer Price Index program office in Washington, D.C.

Presentations

  • Using the Producer Price Index to Understand Domestic Inflation: Learn how services, especially trade services with their margin prices, have had an impact on the volatility of the PPI’s headline “Final Demand” number. We will also discuss in depth the issue of volatility as a natural part of the economy in both the short- and long-term.
  • The Cost of Care: Medical Care Price Indexes and the Consumer and Producer Price Indexes: Examine how the PPI measures the health care and medical care services sectors of the U.S. economy and compare them with those in the CPI. We will also discuss uses of the measures and examine the changing marketplace and demand for medical care services.

We hope to see you there!
