Bureau of Labor Statistics Virtual Data Users Conference - August 17, 2022

The Data Users Conference is an event held by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Mid-Atlantic regional office to showcase the labor market data available to the public and provide insight on the different ways labor market data can be used to analyze the U.S. economy. Join the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on August 17th from 9:00 a.m.–12:10 p.m. ET.

This year the Bureau of Labor Statistics is working closely with the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia to bring together expert economists that will shed light on the labor market changes taking place in these unique times.

BLS Commissioner William Beach will discuss the actions the Agency has taken to continue to deliver gold standard data for public use. Assistant Commissioner Patrick Carey will discuss the latest employment and unemployment trends. Federal Reserve Bank Economist Darcelle Bowrin-Toussaint will discuss labor market disparities in Philadelphia. Federal Reserve Bank Economist Paul Flora will present data demonstrating that economic growth is possible without population growth. Assistant Commissioner Marika Litras will highlight the most interesting aspects of the latest demographic data BLS has available.

Each presentation will be followed by a five minute Q & A period.

9:10–9:35: Seeing More of the Trees Despite the Forest: How BLS is Enhancing the Demographic Details of US Economic Activity

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner William Beach will underline the important work done by the Bureau of Labor Statistics during a unique time for the U.S. economy

9:35–10:10: Demographic and Other Labor Force Trends Since the COVID-19 Pandemic

Patrick Carey, Assistant Commissioner for the Office of Current Employment Analysis, will discuss the latest highlights and trends in employment, unemployment, hours of work, earnings, and other demographic labor force data using the Current Population Survey(CPS) dataset.

10:10–10:45: Labor Market Disparities in the Philadelphia Region

Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia Regional Economic Analyst, Darcelle Bowrin-Toussaint's research on black workers in Philadelphia shows as of 2018, they were underrepresented in higher-paying occupations and overrepresented in lower-paying jobs. Examining this metric periodically provides a simple benchmark by which individual businesses can compare their own efforts toward workplace diversity and by which a region can gauge progress toward reducing disparities in labor market outcomes.

10:45-10:55: BREAK

10:55–11:30: Smart Growth for Regions of All Sizes

Paul Flora, Manager of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia's Research Department analyzes Austin, Cleveland, Las Vegas, and Pittsburgh which represent four very different regions and four very different economies. Ranking them by growth may mislead you. Sometimes, a region with a shrinking population does better. It's the quality, not just the quantity, of jobs that make for a healthy regional economy.

11:30–12:05: Demographic Data in BLS Occupational Safety and Health Data

Marika Litras, Assistant Commissioner for Safety, Health and Working Conditions will explore recent highlights and trends using the Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII) and Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) BLS datasets. These data provide rich demographic detail on gender, race/ethnicity, national origin, and age.
