Business Employment Dynamics in Nebraska — Second Quarter 2023

From March 2023 to June 2023, gross job gains from opening and expanding private-sector establishments in Nebraska were 51,196, while gross job losses from closing and contracting private-sector establishments were 47,470, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Regional Commissioner Jason Palmer noted that the difference between the number of gross job gains and the number of gross job losses yielded a net employment gain of 3,726 jobs in the private sector during the second quarter of 2023. During the previous quarter, gross job gains exceeded gross job losses by 9,428. (See chart 1.)

The change in the number of jobs over time is the net result of increases and decreases in employment that occur at all private businesses in the economy. Business Employment Dynamics (BED) statistics track these changes in employment at private-sector establishments from the third month of one quarter to the third month of the next. The difference between the number of gross job gains and the number of gross job losses is the net change in employment. (See Technical Note.)

Gross job gains

In the second quarter of 2023, gross job gains represented 6.0 percent of private-sector employment in Nebraska; nationally, gross job gains accounted for 6.2 percent of private-sector employment. (See chart 2.) Gross job gains are the sum of increases in employment due to expansions at existing establishments and the addition of new jobs at opening establishments. In Nebraska, gross job gains at expanding establishments totaled 42,445 in the second quarter of 2023, a decrease of 1,860 jobs compared to the previous quarter. (See table 1.) Opening establishments accounted for 8,751 jobs gained in the second quarter of 2023, an increase of 356 jobs from the previous quarter.

Gross job losses

In the second quarter of 2023, gross job losses represented 5.6 percent of private-sector employment in Nebraska; nationally, gross job losses accounted for 5.9 percent of private-sector employment. (See chart 3.) Gross job losses are the result of contractions in employment at existing establishments and the loss of jobs at closing establishments. In Nebraska, contracting establishments lost 39,668 jobs in the second quarter of 2023, an increase of 3,390 jobs from the prior quarter. Closing establishments lost 7,802 jobs, an increase of 808 jobs from the previous quarter.

Industries

Gross job gains exceeded gross job losses in 8 of the 10 industry sectors in Nebraska in the second quarter of 2023. Education and health services had the largest over-the-quarter net job increase, with a gain of 1,666 jobs. This was the result of 7,709 gross job gains and 6,043 gross job losses. The transportation and warehousing industry had a net gain of 1,030 jobs, followed by the professional and business services industry with a net gain of 998 jobs. Retail trade showed a net loss of 656 jobs, the largest loss of any sector in the state. Nebraska’s financial activities industry sector had a net loss of 596 jobs.
