The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) for Detroit-Warren-Dearborn advanced 0.7 percent for the two months ending in February, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Acting Regional Commissioner Julie Wilson noted that energy prices rose 0.7 percent and food prices were 0.2 percent higher over the past two months. The all items less food and energy index was up 0.8 percent. Within the all items less food and energy category, indexes for shelter and apparel increased and the indexes for public transportation and medical care decreased. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, bi-monthly changes may reflect the impact of seasonal influences.)

The Detroit area all items CPI-U advanced 3.3 percent for the 12 months ending in February. The index for all items less food and energy rose 4.2 percent, and the food index increased 0.9 percent. In contrast, the energy index fell 1.5 percent over the same period.

The food index rose 0.2 percent for the two months ending in February. The index for food at home (grocery store purchases) advanced 0.5 percent, with higher prices in 3 of the 6 major grocery store food groups. The food away from home index (restaurant, cafeteria, and vending purchases) declined 0.5 percent for the same period.

The food index rose 0.9 percent over the year. The food at home index declined 0.4 percent. Three of the six major grocery store food group indexes declined over the year, led by dairy and related products (-5.5 percent) and fruits and vegetables (-2.8 percent).

The energy index rose 0.7 percent over the past two months. Gasoline prices rose 2.7 percent.

The energy index declined 1.5 percent from February 2024 to February 2025. Over the year, the gasoline index declined 2.0 percent.

The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.8 percent for the two months ending in February. Among the index’s components, prices were higher for shelter (+0.8 percent) and apparel (+13.3 percent). In contrast, prices were lower for public transportation and medical care (-1.2 percent).

The index for all items less food and energy advanced 4.2 percent over the year. Indexes with increases included shelter (+6.3 percent) and new and used motor vehicles (+3.5 percent).

The April 2025 Consumer Price Index for the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn area is scheduled to be released on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for Detroit is published bi-monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program. Each local index has a much smaller sample size than the national or regional indexes and is, therefore, subject to substantially more sampling and other measurement error. As a result, local-area indexes are more volatile than the national or regional indexes. In addition, local indexes are not adjusted for seasonal influences. NOTE: Area indexes do not measure differences in the level of prices between cities; they only measure the average change in prices for each area since the base period.
