The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn area advanced 0.7 percent for the two months ending in June 2026, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported today. Assistant Commissioner for Regional Operations Michael Hirniak noted that the food index contributed most to the rise (+3.9 percent). The energy index increased 4.3 percent, while the index for all items less food and energy declined 0.2 percent over the two-month period. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, bi-monthly changes may reflect seasonal influences.)

The Detroit-Warren-Dearborn area all items CPI-U increased 4.0 percent for the 12 months ending in June. The index for all items less food and energy increased 2.1 percent over the year, and the energy index increased 20.4 percent. The food index advanced 6.4 percent.

The index for food increased 3.9 percent for the two months ending in June. Prices for food at home (grocery store purchases) rose 1.6 percent, and prices for food away from home (restaurant, cafeteria, and vending purchases) advanced 7.4 percent for the same period. Within the food at home category, prices for 4 of the 6 grocery food categories saw increases, led by the index for fruits and vegetables (+4.6 percent).

The food index advanced 6.4 percent over the year. Prices for food at home rose 4.8 percent. Grocery food categories increasing over the year included fruits and vegetables (+8.5 percent), meats, poultry, fish, and eggs (+6.1 percent), and cereals and bakery products (+9.6 percent). The index for dairy and related products was down 5.9 percent over the year.

The energy index increased 4.3 percent for the two months ending in June. Gasoline prices rose 5.4 percent.

From June 2025 to June 2026, the energy index advanced 20.4 percent. The gasoline index rose 29.4 percent over the year.

The index for all items less food and energy fell 0.2 percent during the two-month period. Among the index’s components, prices were lower for lodging away from home, household furnishings and operations (-3.1 percent), and medical care (-1.2 percent). In contrast, prices were higher for recreation (+2.7 percent), owners’ equivalent rent of residences (+0.8), and used cars and trucks (+3.0 percent).

The index for all items less food and energy increased 2.1 percent over the year. Components contributing to the increase included owners’ equivalent rent of residences (+3.4 percent) and lodging away from home. In contrast, prices were lower for communication.

The August 2026 Consumer Price Index for the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn area is scheduled to be released on Friday, September 11, 2026.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for Detroit is published bi-monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program. Each local index has a much smaller sample size than the national or regional indexes and is, therefore, subject to substantially more sampling and other measurement error. As a result, local-area indexes are more volatile than the national or regional indexes. In addition, local indexes are not adjusted for seasonal influences. NOTE: Area indexes do not measure differences in the level of prices between cities; they only measure the average change in prices for each area since the base period.

The Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, MI Core Based Statistical Area includes Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, and Wayne Counties in Michigan.
