The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn area was unchanged for the two months ending in August 2026, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported today. Assistant Commissioner for Regional Operations Michael Hirniak noted that the index for all items less food and energy declined 0.3 percent, while the food index increased 1.5 percent and the energy index rose 0.3 percent over the two-month period. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, bi-monthly changes may reflect seasonal influences.)

The Detroit-Warren-Dearborn area all items CPI-U advanced 3.7 percent for the 12 months ending in August. Energy prices rose 20.4 percent over the year, and the index for all items less food and energy advanced 1.6 percent over the year. Food prices rose 7.3 percent.

The index for food increased 1.5 percent for the two months ending in August. Prices for food at home (grocery store purchases) were unchanged, while the index for food away from home (restaurant, cafeteria, and vending purchases) advanced 3.6 percent for the same period. Within the food at home category, declines were led by the index for other food at home (-2.9 percent), while increases were led by the index for fruits and vegetables (+4.2 percent).

The food index advanced 7.3 percent over the year. Prices for food at home rose 3.8 percent, while the index for food away from home was up 12.4 percent. All six grocery food category indexes increased over the year, ranging from 7.6 percent for cereals and bakery products to 0.3 percent for other food at home.

The energy index rose 0.3 percent for the two months ending in August. Gasoline prices increased 0.6 percent.

From August 2025 to August 2026, the energy index advanced 20.4 percent. The gasoline index rose 28.8 percent over the year.

The index for all items less food and energy decreased 0.3 percent during the two-month period. Among the index’s components, prices were lower for lodging away from home and medical care (-1.6 percent). In contrast, prices were higher for education and communication, apparel (+5.1 percent), owners’ equivalent rent of residences (+0.1 percent) and household furnishings and operations (+0.8 percent).

The index for all items less food and energy increased 1.6 percent over the year. Components contributing to the increase included shelter (+3.2 percent) and other goods and services (+4.5 percent). In contrast, prices were lower for medical care (-1.5 percent) and used cars and trucks (-2.6 percent).

The October 2026 Consumer Price Index for the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn area is scheduled to be released on Tuesday, November 10, 2026.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for Detroit is published bi-monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program. Each local index has a much smaller sample size than the national or regional indexes and is, therefore, subject to substantially more sampling and other measurement error. As a result, local-area indexes are more volatile than the national or regional indexes. In addition, local indexes are not adjusted for seasonal influences. NOTE: Area indexes do not measure differences in the level of prices between cities; they only measure the average change in prices for each area since the base period.

The Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, MI Core Based Statistical Area includes Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, and Wayne Counties in Michigan.
