Employer-Reported Workplace Injuries and Illnesses in New York — 2022
Private industry employers reported 138,900 nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in New York in 2022, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. (See table A.) Regional Commissioner William J. Sibley noted that this resulted in a total recordable cases (TRC) incidence rate of 2.3 cases per 100 full-time equivalent workers; the national rate was 2.7. (See Technical Note at the end of this release for more information about the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses.)
New York’s findings from the 2022 Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses include:
TRC incidence rates in private industry ranged from 0.5 in financial activities to 3.7 in natural resources and mining and in education and health services. (See table 1.)
Two supersectors, with 44 percent of private industry employment, accounted for 62 percent of the occupational injuries and illnesses: education and health services and trade, transportation, and utilities. (See table 2.)
In private industry, the TRC injury and illness incidence rate ranged from 0.7 for establishments employing fewer than 11 workers to 3.0 for establishments employing 1,000 or more workers. (See table 3.)
New York’s private industry TRC rate of 2.3 in 2022 was not significantly different from the 2021 rate. (See table 4.)

Private industry injury and illness case types
Of the 138,900 private industry injury and illness cases reported in New York, 91,600 were of a more severe nature, involving days away from work, job transfer, or restriction—commonly referred to as DART cases. These cases occurred at a rate of 1.5 cases per 100 full-time workers. Ninety-one percent of the DART cases in New York were incidents that resulted in at least one day away from work, compared to 67 percent nationally. Other recordable cases (those not involving days away from work, job transfer, or restriction) accounted for the remaining 47,300 cases in New York, at a rate of 0.8. In comparison, the national rate for other recordable cases was 1.0.
In New York, the education and health services supersector had a significant increase in the DART rate. No other private industry supersector recorded a significant change in its TRC or DART rate from the previous year. Current year data for the information supersector were unavailable.
In 2022, 115,400 (83.1 percent) of private industry recordable cases were injuries. Workplace illnesses accounted for an additional 23,500 recordable cases.
State and local government injury and illness cases
In the state and local government sector in New York, 53,900 injury and illness cases were reported in 2022, resulting in a rate of 5.6 cases per 100 full-time workers. Nationally, the rate was 4.9. Eighty-one percent of injuries and illnesses reported in New York’s public sector occurred among local government workers. From 2021 to 2022, local government experienced a significant decrease in its TRC and DART incidence rates.
State estimates
Private industry estimates are available for 42 participating states and for the District of Columbia for 2022. (See map 1.) Caution should be taken when comparing total private rates among different states as some differences can be attributed to different industry composition within each state.

The Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII) is a Federal/State cooperative program that publishes estimates on nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses. In-scope cases include work-related injuries or illnesses to workers who require medical care beyond first aid. See the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for the entire recordkeeping guidelines. The SOII excludes all work-related fatalities as well as nonfatal work injuries and illnesses to the self-employed, to workers on farms with 10 or fewer employees, to private household workers, to volunteers, and to federal government workers.
