Business Employment Dynamics in Arizona – Fourth Quarter 2023

From September 2023 to December 2023, gross job losses from closing and contracting private-sector establishments in Arizona were 193,895, while gross job gains from opening and expanding private-sector establishments were 183,915, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Regional Commissioner Chris Rosenlund noted that the difference between the number of gross job gains and the number of gross job losses yielded a net employment loss of 9,980 jobs in the private sector during the fourth quarter of 2023. During the previous quarter, gross job gains exceeded gross job losses by 21,333. (See chart 1.)

Chart 1

The change in the number of jobs over time is the net result of increases and decreases in employment that occur at all private businesses in the economy. Business Employment Dynamics (BED) statistics track these changes in employment at private-sector establishments from the third month of one quarter to the third month of the next. The difference between the number of gross job gains and the number of gross job losses is the net change in employment. (See Technical Note.)

Gross job gains

In the fourth quarter of 2023, gross job gains represented 6.6 percent of private-sector employment in Arizona; nationally, gross job gains accounted for 5.9 percent of private-sector employment. (See chart 2.) Gross job gains are the sum of increases in employment due to expansions at existing establishments and the addition of new jobs at opening establishments. In Arizona, gross job gains at expanding establishments totaled 138,848 in the fourth quarter of 2023, a decrease of 6,708 jobs compared to the previous quarter. (See table 1.) Opening establishments accounted for 45,067 jobs gained in the fourth quarter of 2023, an increase of 6,767 jobs from the previous quarter.

Chart 2
Gross job losses

In the fourth quarter of 2023, gross job losses represented 6.9 percent of private-sector employment in Arizona; nationally, gross job losses accounted for 5.6 percent of private-sector employment. (See chart 3.) Gross job losses are the result of contractions in employment at existing establishments and the loss of jobs at closing establishments. In Arizona, contracting establishments lost 184,226 jobs in the fourth quarter of 2023, an increase of 60,180 jobs from the prior quarter. Closing establishments lost 9,669 jobs, a decrease of 28,808 jobs from the previous quarter.

Chart 3
Industries

Gross job losses exceeded gross job gains in 8 of the 11 industry sectors in Arizona in the fourth quarter of 2023. Education and health services had the largest over-the-quarter net job decrease, with a loss of 13,061 jobs. This was the result of 33,186 gross job losses and 20,125 gross job gains. The highest gross job gains and losses were in the professional and business services industry, which saw a gross job loss of 39,528 and a gross job gain of 35,547. This led to a net loss of 3,981 jobs. The transportation and warehousing industry had a net gain of 4,659 jobs.
