2017 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Revision

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is a common industry classification system used by the United States, Canada and Mexico. NAICS codes are reviewed and revised every five years to keep the classification system current with changes in economic activities.

Four Industries in the 2012 NAICS structure have been expanded for 2017.

211111 - Crude Petroleum and Natural Gas Exraction

  • 211120 - Crude Petroleum Extraction
  • 211130 - Natural Gas Extraction


452112 - Discount Department Stores

  • 452210 - Department Stores (With insignificant perishable grocery sales)
  • 452311 - Warehouse Clubs and Supercenters (with significant perishable grocery sales)


541711 - Research and Development in Biotechnology

  • 541713 - Research and Development in Nanotechnology
  • 541714 - Research and Development in Biotechnology (except Nanobiotechnology)


541712 - Research and Development in the Physical, Engineering and Life Sciences (except Biotechnology)
