Employment Cost Index

Employment Cost Index Levels to be Published to Three Decimal Places

Effective with the release of the June 2025 Employment Cost Index (ECI) on July 31, 2025, the Bureau of Labor Statistics plans to display ECI indexes to three decimal places in all publications. This change will only affect the presentation of published ECI estimates. There will be no changes to data collection or index calculation, and no systematic upward or downward impact on the data will be introduced.

Changes to Publication of ECI Indexes and Percent Changes

This change will apply to all ECI indexes; it will not apply to the response rate estimates provided through the ECI database. Additionally, percent changes will be calculated based upon the three decimal place indexes rather than the current one decimal place indexes. Percent changes will continue to be rounded to one decimal place.

Official ECI estimates previously published will not be revised. Therefore, the three-month percent change from March 2025 to June 2025, will use the new three-decimal place index in June 2025 divided by the one-decimal place index in March 2025. The full transition for percent changes using indexes rounded to 3-decimals will occur in September 2025 for the 3-month percent changes and June 2026 for the 12-month percent changes.

Changes to Publication of ECI Standard Errors

Standard errors will change from publishing with one decimal place to two decimal places with the June 2025 ECI. Official ECI standard errors previously published will not be revised.
