The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) U.S. Import Price Indexes include measures of price change for natural gas in the gaseous and liquified states. BLS first began publishing the import natural gas BEA End Use price index on a quarterly basis in September 1981, converting to monthly publications in December 1994. During the revision period, price index estimates are subject to revision after the original release.
To create the U.S. Import Price Indexes for natural gas, BLS utilizes non-survey data sources. The Import Natural Gas price index is calculated using Census administrative trade records and a subset of data from industry resources.
Monthly data for the import natural gas price index utilizes Census administrative trade records, as well as monthly price data from industry resources. The pricing data obtained from industry resources is for gaseous natural gas and is used to supplement the current month’s calculation. Census administrative trade records are used for the three revision periods.
The most recent data for natural gas can be found in the U.S. Import and Export Price Indexes Economic News Release (https://www.bls.gov/news.release/ximpim.toc.htm). These data are available in a variety of formats on the BLS website (https://www.bls.gov/mxp).
Additional information on the U.S. Import and Export Price Indexes can be found in the BLS Handbook of Methods, specifically under Alternative Data. The Handbook of Methods also can be accessed on the BLS Internet site (https://www.bls.gov/mxp) under the topic "MXP Methods."
